As a teenager…

I think I was a bit weird and lived inside my head a lot. I was creative – art and comedy were my passions. I wasn’t particularly academic and didn’t fancy the boys that all my peers were swooning over, so I happily floated between friendship groups trying to get a sense of where I belonged.

After school…

I was encouraged to do a foundation course in Art & Design, which was amazing. Then one of my lovely tutors suggested I apply to do a Graphic Design degree in Carlisle. I’d really like to thank her for this, because I think this gave me a huge amount of confidence – it was scary because I was the first in my family to go to university so didn’t really know what to expect, but I had a wonderful time, learned loads, and found my people! After graduating I took a year out to live and work in Amsterdam with some friends from home. When I got back, I started to look for Graphic Design jobs whilst working a part-time admin job – where I met my wife!

Now I’m…

Co-Director for Moonloft (a web and graphic design business, started in 2006), I have a Master’s degree in the Psychology of Advertising, and I am a part-time Digital Resources Officer at Lancaster University. I love that I get paid to do colouring in! Over the years I’ve also collected a number of random practical skills like joinery, plumbing, tiling… and I even have an HGV licence! Life is good.

5 bits of advice to my teenage self…

  • Weird is fun, ridiculous is sublime – keep playing
  • Keep learning and trying the things that interest you – good things will follow
  • Go at your own pace, you’ll get there
  • No one can make you feel inferior without your consent
  • You have a lot to give, but keep some of that energy for yourself
